Members choose a face rather than upload one. The faces are drawn by these artists, and are used here under the licences named beside them.
How they work
Each set is a collection of drawn parts, hair, eyes, mouths, skin tones, glasses, and a seed decides which parts a given avatar is made of. We draw 72 from each set, which is 1,224 faces in all, and we draw them ourselves, so choosing or showing an avatar never tells anyone else which page you are reading.

The sets are assembled and rendered with DiceBear, which is open source under the MIT licence. Where a set is CC BY 4.0, the credit above is the attribution that licence asks for; where it is CC0, the artist has put the work in the public domain and we name them anyway.
The monogram
A member who has never opened the picker wears their own initials on one of the academy's colours. That one is ours, drawn in a few lines of code, and no licence applies to it.
